The Veľkofatranská magistrála starts at the railway station in Ľubochňa and climbs through forest to Kopa and the Ľubochnianske sedlo, then follows the ridge by Príslop, Kľak and Malý Lysec to Chata pod Borišovom, a staffed hut on the ridge. From Ploská it runs along the open grass of the main ridge over Ostredok (1,592 m), the highest point of the Veľká Fatra, to Krížna, where it meets the red SNP waymark and follows it by Kráľova studňa down to Donovaly. Three days, with nights at the koliba on Príslop and at Chata pod Borišovom; the last day is long.

- Overnight rules: free camping and bivouacking are not allowed in the Veľká Fatra National Park. Nights are at Chata pod Borišovom (book ahead), the hotel at Kráľova studňa, open huts or the park's designated sites — check the park's current visitor rules.
- The koliby and salaše along the ridge are private shepherds' huts: not all are open, and staying is at the owner's discretion.
- Water: there is no spring on the high ridge around Ostredok; springs below the crest (below Suchý vrch, near the Chyžky salaš, by Príslop) can be dry in autumn. Carry enough for the whole ridge day.
- In winter the ridge between Ostredok and Krížna is avalanche terrain — there have been fatal avalanches on Krížna. Check conditions with the mountain rescue service (HZS).
- Getting there: Ľubochňa is on the Žilina–Košice railway and the waymark starts at the station. Donovaly is on the Banská Bystrica – Ružomberok road with long-distance and regional buses.
