Premužićeva staza was built between 1930 and 1933 under the forester Ante Premužić: a path of dry-stone walls and steps laid with so gentle a gradient that it threads the karst of Northern Velebit almost without climbing. It starts at Zavižan, by the mountain hut and weather station, and runs south through the Northern Velebit National Park — past the limestone towers of the Rožanski kukovi and the Rossijeva koliba shelter — then on through the Velebit Nature Park, with views down to the Adriatic islands, to the road pass at Baške Oštarije. The nights are at the staffed Alan hut and the small shelters along the way. It is one of the most celebrated paths in Croatia, and protected as a cultural monument.

  • Overnight: Planinarska kuća Alan is staffed in season (beds and meals); Rossijeva koliba, Ograđenica and Radlovac are small unstaffed shelters that can be full. Camping and fires are not allowed outside designated places in the park areas — check the current rules with Northern Velebit National Park and Velebit Nature Park.
  • Water: this is waterless karst — there are almost no springs on the path. Carry enough for the day and do not count on the shelters; treat any water you take from a cistern.
  • Closures: a section about 500 m before Rossijeva koliba (coming from Zavižan) was reported closed after storm damage, with a marked detour. Check the current state with the national park before you go.
  • Terrain: the path itself is gentle and well built, but the karst around it is broken and confusing — stay on the waymarked path, especially in fog. Brown bears and horned vipers live on Velebit.
  • Getting there and out: Zavižan is reached by a mountain road from the coast road above Senj/Jablanac; Baške Oštarije lies on the road between Karlobag and Gospić. May to October is the usual season.
